About Me

Amy O’Hearn - Biography & CV

Amy strives for a dichotomous balance of loose creativity and structured precision in her artwork. When painting intuitively she thrives on the risk and spontaneity of not having a plan before starting to paint, she simply clears her mind and lets the colors and the brush take her away. Her representational work uses more of a left brain approach with careful planning and attention.

Her artwork is the culmination of triumphs and mistakes that make it beautiful.  She employs unique techniques and colors with a multi-layered creative process;  each session inspires the choices for the next. The works are complex, dynamic and thought provoking as the visual experience takes your imagination.

After dabbling in art in her teens and early twenties “life happened,” as Amy says, and she veered off her artistic path to complete her 20 year active duty military service in the U.S. Coast Guard.  Before retirement, she re-emerged into her art in 2019 and took a deep dive into her artistic expression. That is until life happened on a global scale with the pandemic. Like most, 2020 was not the best year. Art went on hold for life’s juggling act once again. Luckily, Amy’s back on the Muse’s trail in 2022 in her home town of Dayton, Ohio.

She finds it especially fulfilling when other people interpret her abstract art, noticing things she hadn’t intended.  She considers herself a conduit for the viewers’ unique visions and often names her paintings after the visions others see.

Amy’s goal is to capture the essence of perfect imperfection, self love and acceptance that nurtures growth, countering the cultural pressures to change who we are to fit others’ expectations. Mistakes and flaws are beautiful, as is perfection.
